Sub-Zero not cooling? Here's what to check first

A Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling is alarming — these units hold thousands of dollars of food and are engineered to outlast a decade of daily use. Before you panic, know that many failures trace to a handful of common, diagnosable causes. Here is what to check and and when to call in a trained Sub-Zero specialist.

1. Dirty condenser coils

Sub-Zero units pull air over condenser coils to shed heat. When dust, pet hair, and kitchen grime coat the coils, the compressor runs hot and the cabinet stops reaching temperature. Clean the coils every six months — a soft brush and a vacuum are enough for surface dust.

2. A faulty evaporator fan

If you hear a hum but feel no cold air circulating, the evaporator fan motor may have failed. This fan pushes chilled air from the evaporator into the fresh-food and freezer compartments. A seized or dead fan motor means the compressor works but the cold never reaches your food.

3. A failing or blocked thermostat / damper

Sub-Zero uses thermistors and electronic controls to meter airflow. A failing thermistor sends false temperature readings to the control board, which then starves the compartment of cooling. A blocked damper between the freezer and fresh-food sections produces the same symptom.

4. Ice or frost on the evaporator (defrost failure)

A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer lets frost build into an ice dam across the evaporator. Airflow stops, and the cabinet warms. This failure is a classic 'cools then stops' pattern.

5. A sealed-system (compressor / refrigerant) leak

The least common but most serious cause. If the compressor runs but the system never gets cold, or the unit cycles on a sealed-system leak, the refrigerant charge is compromised. Sealed-system work is precisely where factory-certified service protects both your unit and your Sub-Zero warranty.

When to call a certified technician

Check the obvious items first: is the unit plugged in, are the vents clear, are the doors sealing? If coils are clean, fans spin, and the cabinet is still warm, stop troubleshooting. Sub-Zero's warranty — 2-year full, 5-year sealed system, 12-year compressor — requires factory-certified service for sealed-system and compressor repairs. Using an uncertified tech can void it.

Our EPA 608 Type 1 certified technician is factory-trained on Sub-Zero sealed systems. A $145 diagnostic (credited in full toward the repair when you approve it) gets you a precise answer and an upfront quote before any work begins.
